educate yourself and your dog

What comes to our mind when we think of responsibility? Is responsibility just about having a dog but not treating them as your family?

Let’s try to analyse these questions a little deeper. First and foremost before starting with your pet’s training, one needs to understand that it is as good a responsibility as having a child in your house. Parenting isn’t a practice, it’s a daily learning experience and the dogs depend on you for their lifestyle to be filled with positive experiences. And hence dog training is not just about training the dog but training you, the pet parents…his packleaders!

It’s important to understand that majority part of the training involves the parents as compared to the pet. Seeing your dog react to commands or seeing him do specific tasks doesn’t assure a picture perfect dog. They could still be aggressive, nervous or super hyper and that is purely because the pet parents were never involved or participated in the training. And that’s a big lesson because children are educated by what the grown-up is.

It’s important to have a very high level of understanding about a dog’s psychological behaviour and his drives, and that is precisely the key role of a trainer. The trainer is supposed to guide you and your pet on the right journey ahead towards creating a strong bond and providing companionship and affection. When it comes to home obedience training for city dogs, pet parents need to be trained and educated on how to upbring your dog in a disciplined manner. Discipline means someone who has learnt to not only be a well behaved dog indoors with his family members, guests and kids but also outdoors, especially towards strangers and other dogs. One thing I have always believed in is that to be a parent, you don’t need a biological reason.

As a trainer, it is key for me to demonstrate how to use the social pack behaviour common to wolves and dogs i.e. behaviours such as body language and facial expressions, how to communicate with your dog etc.. I am a strong believer of ‘Zero Shortcuts’ and I apply that to my trainings as well. I refuse to use what I call as a ‘Band Aid’ approach – one that only covers a problem on the surface without getting to the root of it, leave alone solving it. Each of my carefully thought problem solving training steps builds on the previous step. I associate my success to ‘3 P’s’ i.e. Patience, Persistence and Praise. My special techniques for dealing with serious dog behavioural problems sometimes involve using what i call a ‘Set up’ situation that clearly shows a dog what not to do – deprogramming the bad behaviour and reprogramming a desired one. These techniques and many more will help you deal with almost any dog behaviour problem you might have, from a housebreaking lapse to an overly aggressive dog. No matter what kind of dog you have or what kind of training you want for it, my techniques will always target the pain areas which are always ignored. Apart from ensuring the dog benefits from my trainings, what gives me a high most of the times is when the pet parents call it ‘Magic’ but eventually it is making sure the basics are well covered.
